Think back to your pre-teen and teen years and remember how much peer pressure you existed under. Actually, peer pressure throughout life, not just our teens! But in school we often ended up dressing like the friends we ran with: if with country or cowboy friends we wore boots, jeans and cowboy hats; if we were into sports and ran with jocks, we wore cleats, running shoes, specialty socks, shirts, shorts and sweats; if with preppy friends we wore styles from the same stores, fixed our hair to mimic theirs and wore shoes and slacks that matched theirs. You get the picture. We wanted to look like our friends and fit into the group.
But God wants to know “What’s your uniform?” Most likely the majority of us immediately think of Ephesians 5 which speaks of putting on the whole armor of God: the helmet, breastplate, girding our loins; the shield, the sword, and wearing shoes for battle. That is so true and we should wear armor and equip ourselves daily for the battle.
But really, what is your uniform? Pondering on that question the words love, service, humility, joy, peace, faithfulness and honesty began floating into my thoughts. Additional fruit of the Spirit filled my mind as well: gentleness, patience, kindness, goodness, self-control.
Then the realization came: the more we are with Him, spend time with Him, abide in His presence, remain in His Word, seek Him and call out to Him, the more we become like Him. When we KNOW Him, we begin to dress like Him.
What is your uniform? Sit in His presence today and wait for the Spirit of God to speak words to your heart of what your uniform consists of. Sit in His presence and think on your ‘covering.’ Allow them to fill you, cover you and prepare you for your day . . . for your life.
What is your uniform?
